Tuesday morning, and time for a little routine maintenance.

Here’s a Douglas A-20 Havoc having its Wright R-2600-23 Twin Cyclone 14-cylinder radials getting some TLC in 1942. With the red cross on the fuselage, it was likely taking part in war games.

Interesting, I’d never thought about holding war games in the middle of a global war. Seems a bit redundant, but I suppose they were busy training a massive influx of new personnel.

I suppose. But I got that info from the Smithsonian, and those folks  are a lot smarter than I am.

It could also be a straight up training airframe for mechanics.

My father-in-law spent his part of his youth as an A&P in the Air Force. He was stationed in Vietnam and has stories, although he doesn’t talk about it much. I’ll see if he’s willing to share a few of his pictures .

If he doesn’t mind, I’d love to see the photos.

It doesn’t look that much different today.

Have some A-20s ,and M2s (I think) in training at the Desert Training Center is California sometime in 1942. Looks like the tanks crews are training AA defense although it’s probably just an exercise at pointing the guns at the Havocs and yelling “bang.”

The M on the turrets mean these light tanks are substitutions for medium tanks but there weren’t enough to go around at this point.

Damn, those Havocs are down in the weeds.

Gotta practice those low level attack runs.  I do wonder if this is lower than usual for this particular photo op.

Dangerous work down low. Here, an A-20G gets the hammer over during an attack on Papua in 1944.

Have you considered approaching him about an interview for the sake of genealogy? You might sit down with him and a little webcam if he is game.

I looked at that photo quickly and thought it was a Betty. The front part of the fuse looks similar although the Betty had a  cigar-shaped empennage.
